  • Cross-flow tower packing is a key component in cooling towers used to increase the contact area and time between water and air to promote heat exchange. The following is a detailed introduction to the packing of the cross-flow tower:

    Structural characteristics

Shape design: It is usually made of thin sheet materials such as plastic or fiberglass reinforced plastic, and has various shapes. Common ones include inclined corrugated and stepped shapes. These shape designs aim to increase the distribution area of water and the water flow path, enabling water to form a uniform water film on the surface of the packing material, while allowing air to pass smoothly through the packing layer, achieving full contact between water and air.

The size and specification of the cross-flow tower packing vary according to the different models and design requirements of the cooling tower. Generally speaking, the height of the packing is around 0.5 to 2 meters, while the width and length are customized according to the planar dimensions of the cooling tower to adapt to different tower structures and the distribution requirements of water flow and air flow.

    Material characteristics

Corrosion resistance: Plastic materials such as polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and polypropylene (PP) are often used. These materials have excellent corrosion resistance and can resist the erosion of acidic and alkaline substances, dissolved salts, and microorganisms in the circulating water, thus ensuring that the packing will not be damaged due to corrosion during long-term use and extending its service life.

High-temperature resistance: During the operation of the cooling tower, the packing needs to withstand hot water at a relatively high temperature. Therefore, the selected material should have certain high-temperature resistance, being able to maintain stable physical and chemical properties under the long-term action of hot water, without deformation, embrittlement or softening, etc. For instance, some specially treated PVC fillers can operate stably for a long time at water temperatures ranging from 70 to 80℃.

High strength and toughness: To withstand the impact of water flow and air flow as well as its own weight, the cross-flow tower packing needs to have sufficient strength and toughness. Through reasonable formula design and processing technology, plastic materials can have high tensile strength, bending strength and impact toughness, ensuring that the filler is not easy to break or be damaged during installation and use, and maintaining its structural integrity.

Surface properties: The surface of the filler usually has a certain degree of roughness and hydrophilicity, which is conducive to the formation of a uniform water film on its surface and increases the contact area between water and air. Good surface properties can enhance heat exchange efficiency, enabling water to transfer heat to the air more effectively.

    Performance advantage

Efficient heat exchange capacity: The special structure and shape of the cross-flow tower packing enable water and air to conduct thorough heat exchange over a large contact area. Water forms a thin and uniform water film on the surface of the packing material, while air flows across the packing layer in a cross-sectional manner, fully contacting the water film. Thus, the heat in the water is effectively transferred to the air, achieving a cooling effect. Compared with other types of packing, cross-flow tower packing can achieve a higher heat exchange efficiency in a smaller space and reduce the floor space occupied by the cooling tower.

Excellent water distribution performance: The design of the packing material enables water to be evenly distributed on its surface, avoiding the phenomenon of concentrated water flow or local drying up. This helps to enhance the utilization rate of the entire packing layer, enabling each part of the packing to fully exert its heat exchange function, thereby improving the overall performance of the cooling tower. Meanwhile, uniform water distribution is also conducive to reducing the deposition of scale and dirt on the surface of the packing, thereby prolonging the service life of the packing.

Low resistance feature: The structural design of the cross-flow tower packing ensures that the air resistance is relatively small when passing through the packing layer, which can reduce the energy consumption of the fan. Under the premise of ensuring good heat exchange effect, lower air resistance can make the air flow more smoothly, improve the ventilation performance of the cooling tower, thereby enhancing the cooling effect, and at the same time reduce the operating cost.

Anti-aging and anti-biological contamination capabilities: High-quality cross-flow tower packing has excellent anti-aging performance and can maintain stable performance under long-term exposure to ultraviolet rays, temperature changes, and the action of chemical substances. In addition, some fillers also have the property of resisting biological contamination, which can inhibit the growth and reproduction of algae, bacteria and other microorganisms on their surfaces, reduce the decline in heat exchange efficiency and clogging problems caused by biological fouling, and lower maintenance costs.

    Application field

Industrial cooling systems: Widely used in cooling systems of industrial fields such as power, chemical engineering, metallurgy, and machinery, they are used to cool hot water generated by various process equipment, such as the cooling water for condensers in generator sets and the circulating cooling water for chemical reaction vessels. By using cross-flow tower packing, the water temperature can be effectively reduced, ensuring the normal operation of process equipment and improving production efficiency.

Central air conditioning systems: In the central air conditioning systems of commercial buildings, office buildings, hotels and other places, the cross-flow tower packing is an important component of the cooling tower. It is used to cool the hot water generated by the central air conditioning main unit, providing low-temperature cooling water for the air conditioning system, thereby achieving the regulation and cooling of indoor air. The high-efficiency heat exchange capacity and low resistance characteristics of the cross-flow tower packing help reduce the energy consumption of the central air conditioning system and improve the operational efficiency and economy of the system.

Other fields: In some special fields that require cooling, such as the cooling of aeration tanks in sewage treatment plants and the cooling systems in data centers, cross-flow tower packing has also been applied. It can provide reliable cooling solutions for these systems, meeting the specific requirements of different industries for cooling effect and water quality.
